Mumbai Indians thrash Pune Warriors by 41 runs

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a challenging total of 183 for three, courtesy a fantastic 62 by Rohit Sharma and useful contributions from Sachin Tendulkar (44) and Dinesh Karthik (41).

The MI bowlers then took wickets at regular intervals to restrict Pune Warriors to 142 for eight despite Mitchell Marsh`s rearguard effort of 38.

This is Mumbai Indians` third win in four matches and they now have six points while Pune slumped to their third defeat from four matches.

Left-arm speedster Mitchell Johnson (3/33) swung the match in MI`s favour at the onset as his inswinging yorker castled Pune`s last match hero Aaron Finch (0) and then got one to come in to dismiss Robin Uthappa (7) while Ross Taylor (4) was run-out.

From 13 for three, the comeback was virtually impossible and the likes of Yuvraj Singh (24) and captain Angelo Mathews (19) also couldn`t make much of a headway as the target became a tall order.

The decision to play Ross Taylor ahead of a highly successful Steve Smith defied any logic as the New Zealander hasn`t made any significant contribution in the last two editions of IPL.

Marsh tried his best but didn`t have a single partner who was ready to stay along and built a partnership. Credit to MI bowlers as they always had a tight grip on the proceedings.

Earlier, Rohit blazed his way to an unbeaten 32-ball 62 as Mumbai Indians posted a challenging 183 for three after opting to bat.

Rohit, who has been known as an `IPL specialist` smashed three fours and five sixes as the home team put up a sizeable total on a flat track at the Wankhede Stadium.

Sachin Tendulkar (44) and Dinesh Karthik (41, 29 balls, 4x4, 1x6) also made significant contributions

Sir Ravindra Jadeja pulls off a heist

The last time Royal Challengers Bangalore went to Chennai, Virat Kohli lost a won match when he bowled one over. The captain this time, Kohli lost a won game by handing over the ball to RP Singh, who conceded 16 in the last over, including a huge no-ball, which was caught at third man and would have won them the match had RP not overstepped - it was meant to be the final ball of the game. Laughing all the way to the win was Ravindra Jadeja, who mixed educated edges and meaty blows superbly to take Chennai Super Kings home with 38 off 20.
After Ravi Rampaul and R Vinay Kumar removed the openers to reduce Super Kings to 10 for 2 in four overs, it was all uphill for the home side. Suresh Raina and S Badrinath rebuilt but when they fell Super Kings still needed 88 off 46. Vinay brought it to 65 off 30, conceding only six in the 15th over. Dhoni and Jadeja kept on hitting the odd boundary, one of them right out of the stadium, but the asking rate kept going up.
With 29 required off the last two overs, Rampaul seemed to have sealed the deal with the wickets of Dhoni - for 33 off 23 - and Bravo - for 8 off 3 - in the 19th over. However, Kohli had a situation on his hands. Vinay had bowled out, and he had to choose between Daniel Christian and RP because the left-arm spinners would have turned or angled the ball into Jadeja's natural swing. Christian had gone for just 13 in two overs, but has had a forgettable record bowling the final over in IPL games.
So RP it was, and RP it was who bowled two length balls at the top of the over. Jadeja edged the first over short third man, but absolutely smoked the next one over long-on. The pressure was squarely on Royal Challengers now. Wearing the orange cap, reclaimed through an anchoring fifty earlier in the innings, he misfielded the fourth ball at long-on, allowing the second. He had done so earlier too.
Chris Morris, who had taken three wickets including the big one of Chris Gayle and two during the slog overs to keep Royal Challengers down to 165, accepted that couple and followed it with a single to make it two required off the last ball. Surreal scenes followed. RP bowled a bouncer, Jadeja ramped it straight to third man, Kohli thought he could yet end up on the right side of it until he saw the outstretched arm of the umpire and the celebrating Jadeja, who seems to be unable to do any wrong this season even if he tries.
Replays showed this wasn't just any ordinary no-ball, RP had overstepped by a foot. Kohli backed RP in the public, but there might be words spoken behind closed doors. Royal Challengers will also look at the last over when they batted, when Arun Karthik kept heaving and wasting deliveries as opposed to bringing to strike AB de Villiers, who scored a manic 64 off 32, full of sweeps against fast bowlers.

Time for Kolkata Knight Riders to turn it around

In the most unpredictable format of a game long celebrated for its 'glorious uncertainties', it's often about how you handle the troughs in the roller-coaster ride that defines a team's campaign.

After suffering back-to-back losses, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking for inspiration to pick themselves up. It won't help that Sunrisers Hyderabad, the side they face at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, are now riding the crest with three wins from four matches.

For Gautam Gambhir and his 'knights' it will, of course, be good to be back home, where conditions have often confused opposition even as they lent themselves nicely to KKR's strengths. But, then, even as the likes of Sunil Narine, Laksmipathy Balaji and Rajat Bhatia look to revel on Eden's slow pitch, KKR need to ask themselves whether they are on the right track. From team selection to approach while batting or bowling, everything is crying for a review.

Aashiqui 2’: At its core, film is simple, emotional

When in 1990 Mahesh Bhatt created the ‘dream’ called ‘Aashiqui’, little did he know that the film would receive the status of a cult upon its release. Twenty-three years down the line that dream of Mahesh Bhatt is on its way to be taken forward with ‘Aashiqui 2’. Director Mohit Suri has helmed the project this time around with newcomers Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. The music of the film has already set on fire charts everywhere and what remains to be seen is whether or not the film will be able to re-create the magic that its predecessor had done two decades back.
